How does CHIROPRACTIC work?
Very simply, a chiropractic adjustment helps restore normal function to the spine and nervous system. Many symptoms, including pain are often the result of areas in the spine that do not move normally and muscles that are either tense and tight or weak and inhibited. The chiropractic adjustment corrects all of these imbalances. The postural and rehabilitative exercises ensure that the problem does not return.
How are chiropractic and massage different?
Chiropractors have extensive training that allows them to examine and diagnose conditions - they are doctors. In addition to working with the muscles, chiropractors return normal function to the joints using manipulation. Without normal joint function, muscle spasm and tension returns.
Massage has many wonderful therapeutic benefits including improved circulation, release of toxins, decreased muscle tension and deep relaxation. Chiropractic and massage work very well together! Many of our patients receive massage therapy in addition to chiropractic as part of their total treatment program.
Once I go to a chiropractor will I ALWAYS have to go?
Not if you come to our office! Our goal is not to create patient dependence, but to teach our patients tools that can result in resolution of their problems. Let's be realistic, if you continue to do what you did to get yourself in trouble in the first place - it is only a matter of time, before you will be in trouble again.
Most patients need to learn to use their bodies in a more efficient manner. That is what we work so hard to accomplish at Perri Chiropractic. The catch is that YOU have some work to do - patients who are faithful to a home program of exercise and body awareness have significantly better results from treatment.
Yearly preventative check-ups are recommended in order to ensure that the spine is maintained in ideal condition.
What do I wear for my first visit?
Women are asked to wear shorts and either a sports bra or bathing suit top. Men wear shorts.
Dr. Perri's examination is head to toe - be prepared to take off shoes and socks also. Those with long hair are asked to tie it back.
Subsequent visits require loose and comfortable clothing. Patients are asked to refrain from wearing jeans or bulky sweaters. A changing area is available if necessary.
Will it hurt to be adjusted?
Dr. Perri's techniques are extremely gentle and specific. Because she spends time relaxing the muscles, the joints are mobilized with minimum effort. During the adjustment, the tender spots are gently released in layers, like peeling an onion.

What will the examination be like?
The examination at our office is very thorough - some patients claim it is the most complete physical examination they have ever experienced. Dr Perri first takes a complete history and begins by analyzing posture in various positions. This is followed by testing the general movement of the spine and area of complaint, balance, areas of joint or muscle tenderness and lack of normal tone, joint restriction, muscle tightness, muscle inhibition, movement patterns and co-ordination. Often the patient is asked to walk or perform other simple activities of daily living while movement and co-ordination is assessed. Patterns of breathing and ability to relax are also evaluated. Of course, traditional orthopedic and neurological tests are also performed. X-ray, advanced imaging and lab work is ordered as needed.
This in-depth analysis of "function" allows Dr. Perri to understand the underlying causes of a patient's problems and most importantly, allows her to formulate a treatment program aimed at correcting these functional imbalances.
How long will each visit take?
The first visit lasts up to one hour. Dr. Perri spends 10-20 minutes with each patient on follow-up visits. In addition, patients often spend 10-20 minutes in our active care gym.
At the end of each session, patients are encouraged to relax for several minutes. You will not feel "rushed out" at our office.
What does it feel like to be adjusted by Dr. Perri?
Patients often describe the muscle releases like butter melting or air being let out of a balloon - it is a very comfortable and relaxing experience. The manipulations are gentle and specific - patients describe the sensation of pressure being released and relief after.
The sound that occurs when a joint capsule is stretched is simply nitrogen gas quickly being released and then reabsorbed by the joint as it is "released" and allowed to move normally again.
How will I feel after I am adjusted?
When a condition is recent and uncomplicated, patients often experience progressive relief after every adjustment. If inflammation is present, it is normal to feel "little or no" change in symptoms for several visits until the inflammation diminishes. At our office, most patients receive significant relief in the first two weeks.
Is chiropractic safe during pregnancy?
For nearly 20 years, Dr. Perri has enjoyed treating hundreds of women throughout all nine months of pregnancy. Her gentle touch and special tables have given her the opportunity to share in this special time and give tremendous relief to so many. Pregnancy is one of the most important times to make sure your body is functioning optimally with regular chiropractic care.
Is chiropractic safe for children?
Heavy book bags, de-conditioned young bodies from too much TV and computer work and ever increasing "pressure" to achieve has led to a barrage of complaints in children today. Dr Perri's treatment is focused on prevention, posture, conditioning and relaxation techniques - it is ideal for young bodies that are pre-maturely "mal-functioning". Chiropractic is safe for children and should be included as part of their "wellness program" with routine 6 month check-ups.
Children respond incredibly quickly to her unique treatment approach. Dr. Perri has extensive clinical experience treating children and she loves doing it - that in combination with our warm environment and -"lots of things to play with" makes coming to our office something children look forward to! |
